Migrating from Bookpedia

You can move your Bookpedia collection to Book Tracker with one CSV file. Bookpedia lets you choose which columns to export, so the first step is making sure it exports all of them.

Show every column

Bookpedia exports only the columns that are visible in its list view.

  1. Open Bookpedia and press Command-J to open the Columns panel.
  2. Turn on every column.

Check Bookpedia’s language

Book Tracker recognizes Bookpedia files in English, Italian, and German, but many columns only come across when Bookpedia is in English. Switch it to English before exporting:

  1. Open System Settings and go to General → Language & Region.
  2. Under Applications, click the + button.
  3. Choose Bookpedia and select English.
  4. Quit and reopen Bookpedia.

You can switch it back once the export is done.

Export your collection as CSV

  1. In Bookpedia, choose File → Export Collection.
  2. Select Text, then CSV.
  3. Click Export and save the file.

Import the file into Book Tracker

  1. Open Book Tracker and go to Settings → Import.
  2. Tap Choose File and select the Bookpedia file.
  3. Under Exported from, Book Tracker shows Bookpedia. If it shows a different app, tap it and pick Bookpedia.
  4. Tap Continue. Book Tracker looks up your books and finds their covers. When it’s done, tap Review.
  5. Review the list. Each row says what will happen to that book; tap a row to leave it out.
  6. Tap the Import button, which shows how many books are coming in (for example, Import 312 books). Book Tracker backs up your library before it adds anything.

What comes across

  • The book: title, authors, illustrators, translators, publisher, ISBN, pages, format, summary, release date, place of publication, and link.
  • Series.
  • Genres and subjects as categories; tags and collections as tags.
  • Location.
  • Your rating, converted to the rating scale you use in Book Tracker.
  • Readings: the read count and the date of the last reading. Earlier readings arrive without dates.
  • Notes and comments, saved as notes.
  • Price and purchase date.
  • Owned: books marked as not owned arrive as Not owned.

Limits

  • Only the columns that were visible when you exported come across. If something is missing, show that column in Bookpedia and export again.
  • An Italian or German export brings in fewer details than an English one: columns like format, ISBN, location, tags, and notes are read only in English.
  • In any other language, Book Tracker doesn’t recognize the file. Pick Bookpedia from the list anyway: Book Tracker reminds you to export again in English.
